The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. in the Library Conference Room.
1. To implement the policies suggested at its previous meeting, Council discussed making the following changes to the Faculty Handbook:
p. 9. Substitute under “Conditions for Academic Appointments”:
b. Academic appointees shall annually be awarded a two-year rolling contract, so that they will be assured of at least a full year’s notice of termination.
Academic appointees at the rank of Associate Professor shall receive a 3-year rolling contract, so that they will be assured of at least two years’ notice of termination. Those at the rank of Professor shall receive a 5-year rolling contract, so that they will be assured of at least four years’ notice of termination.
p. 11. Add new category “4,” following “Promotion for Professional Specialist”:
4. Professional Specialists who have been promoted to Associate Technical or Clinical Professor shall receive 3-year rolling contracts.
Professional Specialists who have been promoted to Technical or Clinical Professor shall receive 5-year rolling contracts.
Professional Specialists initially hired at advanced rank shall receive these rolling contracts after their sixth year at King’s.
p. 24. Under “Application Procedures,” delete:
The applications of Professional Specialists for promotion will be evaluated by the Senior Promotion Committee.
p. 68. Add to “Committee on Senior Promotion” / “Membership” paragraph:
Up to two additional members having the rank of Clinical or Technical Professor (if available) will be elected by the faculty at large.
Delete numeral 8 from heading and word “eight” from text to reflect the fact that the Committee on Senior Promotion may now consist of a greater number of members.
p. 69. Add to “Recommendations for the President” (line 3):
. . . promotion to the rank of Professor, Clinical Professor, and Technical Professor.
Delete numeral 8 from heading and word “eight” from text to reflect the fact that the Committee on Tenure and Promotion may now consist of a greater number of members.
p. 70. Add category “3” to “Committee on Tenure and Promotion” / “Membership”:
3) Two Associate or Full Clinical or Technical Professors (if available), elected by the faculty at large. They will deliberate only on the promotion of Professional Specialists.
Add to “Recommendations to the President” (line 4):
. . . to the rank of Professor, Clinical Professor, or Technical Professor.
p. 75. Add to “Procedural Guidelines,” Part C, paragraph 2:
If no Professional Specialist is available to serve on the committee . . .
Council passed a motion to accept the preceding changes as amended.
2. Council discussed moving the following items from the Faculty Handbook to the Academic Policies Handbook:
XII. The College Judicial System (p. 88), and
XIII. Student Bill of Rights and Responsibilities (p 101),
and moving the following item from the Academic Policies Handbook to the Faculty Handbook:
c. Team Teaching (p. 10),
which will be listed in the Faculty Handbook as a new category (#4) under “Course-Related Work” (pp. 41-42).
Council passed a motion to accept these proposed relocations.
3. In a discussion of health care benefits, Council members noted the dissatisfaction among some faculty with current health benefit choices and raised questions about the governance process used to make decisions regarding health care benefits. Recognizing that the potential to influence these decisions may be curtailed by insurance providers, Council recommended nonetheless that the Faculty Benefits Committee continue to address the matter.
4. Council unanimously voiced its gratitude to Dr. Fred Sauls for his steady, efficient, and productive leadership of Council.
5. After providing Dr. Sauls with assessment goals and strategies for properly attaching documents to e-mail messages, Council adjourned, sine die, at 2:45.
