Old Business:
Discussion of Faculty Meeting (2/18)
Ballots from the vote on the new constitution are due on Monday, February 28th.
Faculty Celebration
Planning is underway for the upcoming “faculty celebration.” The day will be focusing on relaxation and fun. Date and location will be announced.
Wording for “Professional Development” section of the handbook
Wording for clarification of specific professional development requirements in certain departments / divisions is being worked on for inclusion in the handbook. This could be added perhaps on page 30 as letter “F”. Some on council, however, proposed including this material as an appendix to the Faculty Handbook. We anticipate continued discussion on this at the March 18th council meeting. Please note that this is not related to the issue of market supplements or tenure and promotion. (A statement of market supplement from administration is in process).
Faculty who teach in certain programs / departments are required to meet specific standards because of accrediting bodies.
Faculty in the Physician Assistant and Athletic Training Education Program are required to maintain professional accreditation and minimum continuing medical education standards.
Faculty in the McGowan School of Business are required to have five “scholarship events” in five years with two of these events being peer reviewed journal articles (qualifying journals are to be listed in Cabell’s Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Management, Accounting, Finance, Marketing and Economics).
Faculty in education are required to engage in scholarly activities.
Overload policy
It was noted that there is a missing item number (d) related to overloads that was approved by FC in May 2003. We will have this corrected in the updated handbook.
It was moved and seconded that section “e” under “Criteria and Procedures for Overloads” on p. 42 of the Faculty Handbook should be added:
“When an overload is desired by a full-time faculty member, and the effect of the overload is judged by the faculty member, the Department Chair, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs not to unduly burden the faculty member’s teaching and professional responsibilities, delegating an overload to said faculty should be considered affirmatively.”
The motion was passed.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Laurie Sterling
