Discussion with Father Grimes:
Father Grimes addressed the Council and guests regarding the question of the possibility of tenure for professional specialists. Fr. Grimes reminded Council of the historic context by which the current structure was created. In addition, he noted that there are two major points to consider. First, there is a question of the appropriateness of someone going from a professional specialist position to immediate application of tenure. Second, the ATEP program has never (in its short history) had a tenure track position. The Physician Assistant program had one tenure track position in the past (held by Mrs. Babonis) but does not currently. The professional specialist category was developed to prevent a “revolving door” in such programs.
In general, the administration is open to consideration of the question of tenure for professional specialists. There are at least three points that should be addressed. First, the issue of a probationary period must be solved. Second, the fact that there have been no tenure track positions in either the Physician Assistant program or in Sports Medicine must be considered. Finally, faculty input is necessary.
In light of the perceived limited interest among our current professional specialist faculty, other ways of improving their employment security (short of tenure) were briefly examined.
Next meeting: February 13, 2004
Meeting Adjourned: 3:11 pm
Respectfully submitted,
B. Bower
