Faculty Council Minutes
2004-2005

May 13, 2005

Present: Derrick Boucher, Charlie Brooks, Jim Dolhon, Howard Fedrick, Brian Pavlac, Margarita Rose, Laurie Sterling, Barbara Sauls, Chair, & Fred Sauls, Chair Elect

The meeting was called to order @2:05p.m. in the Library Conference Room.

1. A&P officially submitted a revised version of the Student Evaluation of Teaching Forms for Council consideration. After some minor debate, the new form was accepted as revised. Key changes are as follows: a) the student class designation “freshmen” was changed to “first year,” b) question #10 - “Overall I was satisfied with this course as taught by this instructor” - was dropped, and c) three open-ended questions were added to the back of the form (by a 6 to 1 vote) with the heading, “Your comments can help me make decisions about how I teach this course in the future.”
The questions are;

i. “What one specific thing from the course do you think was most helpful, and why?”
ii. “What one specific thing from the course do you think was least helpful, and why?”
iii.“What, if anything, do you think should be done differently?”

The new forms will be implemented in the 2005 fall semester.

2. The measure brought by A&P to deliberate Senior Faculty Development procedure revisions (wording changed from Senior Faculty Review) was “officially tabled for further review” until next year.

3. The Annual Faculty Activity Summary was accepted as currently written and inserted on pg. 78, after IV - STANDARDIZED FORM FOR CURRICULUM VITAE, in PART THREE: INFORMATIONAL SECTION, in the faculty handbook. This was approved years ago, but it had not been formally incorporated into the handbook.

4. The measure brought by Margarita Rose to deliberate Family and Medical Leave Policy revisions was “officially tabled for further review” until next year.

5. An official missive from The Vice President for Academic Affairs addressing the particular circumstances of market supplements to accompany existing language in the Faculty Handbook on pg. 53 (A. Salaries, 1. Salary Scale), beneath XI - SALARIES AND BENEFITS, in PART TWO: COLLEGIAL RELATIONS, was not accepted as written. The document also addressed twelve month contract differences regarding clinical faculty salaries. Council asks for further clarification of the matters.

6. The Chair shared the response of The Academic and Professional Affairs Committee of the Board of Directors to three proposals brought forth by Faculty Council:

a) Regarding extended contracts for promoted professional specialists: The A&P Committee of the BOD would first like to determine the financial impact of multi-year contracts before consulting with Council about eliminating the term “rolling,” and responding to the goal intended.
b) Regarding the elimination of caps on tenured positions: The Committee hopes to present a recommendation on the matter to the full Board in October of 2005.
c) Regarding the new Constitution of Faculty Governance: The Committee expressed serious reservations about the scope, complexity and workability of the structures proposed in the document. They advised administration to explore with Council a different approach that would more clearly recognize the sphere and domain of faculty competence. The Committee suggested that it might be fruitful to distinguish between a fundamental document (constitution) that includes basic principles, and other documents that delineate specifics of operating structures (Faculty Meeting, Council, committees). Council has registered the response and has taken it under advisement.

7. The Chair announced that the Gold Room will indeed function as a Faculty Lounge this coming fall, though specific accommodations and appointments are still currently under deliberation.

8. Council takes this opportunity to note its genuine appreciation and gratitude to Barbara Sauls for her steadfast leadership throughout the year.

Faculty Council was officially was adjourned for the year@3:29p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
James P. Dolhon

Note: If anyone wants to review a copy of the tabled items before they are addressed next fall, contact Barb Sauls.
