FACULTY GOVERNANCE | Back to King's College | Back to Faculty Governance | Back to Minutes List
November 12, 2004
Present: Barbara Sauls (Chair), David Baggett, Vanessa Bates (Student Government Representative), Charles Brooks, Derrick Boucher, James Dolhon, Howard Fedrick, Brian Pavlac, Margarita Rose, and Laurie Sterling
The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. in 115, Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center.
I. Announcements included that the issue was broached with administration as to whether adjunct faculty are invited to the Patron’s Day award ceremony dinner. Previously they’ve not been invited until they became due for an award. Discussion followed that at least those involved in the liturgy of the ceremony get issued an invitation to participate in the dinner, though no formal motion was given to this effect. The chair will ask Fr. O’Hara if this is possible.
II. C&T reported that they’re still in the process of recording written comments on surveys of faculty members on issues related to revising the CORE. They’re updating the statistics of late surveys and will post results on their website soon. A note will be sent to the faculty informing them of this.
III. A&P reported that they hope to finish revisions soon on their governance revision proposal. Faculty council will read the proposed revisions before their next meeting on Dec. 3, discuss the revisions, and decide on how to proceed to bring the revisions up for consideration by administration. The revisions will be put on a website for all faculty members to access.
IV. An issue was discussed involving registration and courses in which C- grades are assigned, which fail to satisfy major sequence course grade requirements, but which currently can’t be retaken by students (only D or F grades can be retaken). A motion was made to include such courses among those able to be retaken. The motion passed unanimously.

A student who receives a ‘C-’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade in a course may retake the course.
V. Regarding proposed revisions to the faculty handbook, a vote passed 6-3 on whether new language was called for on issues related to evaluation of probationary faculty. In terms of the new language, on p. 14 explicit reference to “and active participation…in departmental and other faculty activities” was considered, but then “active” was replaced with “constructive,” and the motion passed unanimously. One other change formally made on p. 14 reduced the required classroom visitations per semester for full-time probationary faculty from two to one.
HANDBOOK CHANGE
Page 14. G. 1. f. To observe and evaluate the work and constructive participation of all departmental faculty in departmental and other faculty activities, including: to conduct at least one two classroom visitations per semester for full-time probationary faculty, monitor student response from those classes, and to consult with the faculty member; to visit the classes of all new part-time faculty at least once early in the semester.
Language on p. 30 was added requiring yearly evaluations of performance of probationary faculty members, but the language has to be modified to replace references to the Vice President for Academic Affairs with reference instead either to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty or, in the case of the Business School, Director of the Business School. This led to the expression of concern over the uniqueness of the Business School in this respect so crucial to issues of tenure and promotion. It was also suggested that language be added to ensure that written summaries of those yearly evaluations be sent to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, as that is the person ultimately responsible for decisions about tenure and promotion. After these changes are made and cleared with administration, faculty council will look at the revisions again and make a formal decision about them.
VI. Fully online courses were then discussed, and whether or not first-year students should be allowed to take them. A motion to this effect will be further discussed on Dec. 3 at the next faculty council meeting.
Council adjourned about 3:20
Respectfully submitted, Dave Baggett
