my judging philosophy
by eric emerson, texas, director, the kinkaid school
i would like to begin with a caveat. i have not judged that many rounds on this topic so do not assume i know all of the acronyms or terminology. i have done a fair amount of research on sanctions and in preparation for the ndt, so i am not totally ignorant (well maybe i am, but hey, what are you gonna do). otherwise, all issues are debatable. this includes theoretically 'jive' counterplans, topicality in its many splendored forms, and various kritik arguments. however, when debating these issues, you need to be as specific as possible applying it to concrete ground/link issues. these issues are all debatable by both the aff and neg. also, i'm willing to vote on 'cheap' shots and theory. this is not to say that you should make them or that i love voting on them, but i would warn all debaters not to be sloppy in hopes that they'll go away. finally, i give the negative presumption unless they run a counterplan (which makes presumption debatable). i'm not sure what presumption means, but, in case of tie or confusion, i'm more prone to voting negative than aff. oh yeah, don't forget that i have a limited attention span so please, please, please make the debate interesting and fun. i enjoy humor, creativity and a positive attitude. if you see me fading off, its not your fault and i swear i'm still paying attention.
