Despite the struggling economy, the four day weekend lasting from Black Friday until Cyber Monday saw 172 million shoppers visit stores and websites. This number is up from 147 million shoppers last year. This record weekend had consumers shopping for this year’s most popular holiday gifts.
Electronics are predicted to be the top sellers this year. Amazon has posted a non-scientific survey of the most popular items this season and all 17 items on the list are new and popular electronics. Laptops, GPS units, video games, digital cameras and iPods all make the cut.
Black Friday sales of Apple products are down from last year, but Apple can still feel confident. Three of Amazon’s top 10 items and ten of their top 25 items were products made by Apple. Other popular products such as the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPhone and software have had strong sales so far.
The iPhone is one of the most wanted items this year, and is by far Apple’s best selling product. Since being re-released by Apple in July 2008, it has had consistently high sales and is sure to be popular during the holidays.
There is no surprise that video games and game consoles are another popular item this season. The X-Box 360 Pro Holiday Bundle was also on Amazon’s list. Sales of the X-Box 360 console were impressive, with a 25 percent increase from the same weekend last year. This is a direct result of a very large price cut.
One of the most popular toys this year is the caster board. This skateboard alternative is more similar to a snowboard on wheels. Unlike a skateboard, a rider’s feet do not have to leave the board to pick up speed.
Another top toy this year is the robot dog. This not-so-creatively-named product is exactly what it sounds like. It is a mass-produced robot that resembles a dog. They are programmed to act like real dogs, and some toy companies cover their robots in synthetic hair to be more realistic. These dogs sneeze, give paw and even get hungry.
These new toys and electronics are quickly gaining popularity and flying off store shelves. Make sure to buy these and any other items you find unique or exciting this holiday season.
