Despite their upset loss to rival Wilkes University on Tuesday night the Lady Monarch Volleyball has started their season on the right track.
Before the Wilkes loss, the Lady Monarchs had won six games in a row, seven of their previous eight. During those six games they defeated two Freedom Conference opponents, Misericordia University and Deleware Valley College.
During their six game win streak King’s managed to not lose a single game. They won every match by a score of 3-0.
The Lady Monarchs looked to take their momentum down River Street when they took on Wilkes Tuesday September 23. King’s had already beaten the Lady Colonels in their opening tournament, 3-1.
King’s had a 2 game lead going into the third game. Wilkes rallied and won 3 straight games giving them the victory, 3-2.
The Lady Monarchs were led by junior Kat Clerici who posted 15 kills and five total blocks while junior Kaitlyn Malshefski followed with 10 kills and 18 digs. Junior Danielle Belfanti recorded 24 digs and Junior Katie Doss contributed with seven kills and 19 digs. Sophomore Samantha Garrigues chipped in with 34 assists and 12 digs.
King’s is currently ranked second in the Freedom Conference behind undefeated newcomer Eastern University. Eastern has the number one spot but King’s overall 12 wins is best in the conference. The Lady Monarchs will travel to Oneonta University in Oneonta, New York for an invitational tournament Saturday and Sunday.
Wychock Breaks Career Goal Record
Senior forward Debbie Wychock broke the King’s Field Hockey career goals record (61) when she scored three times in a game against Elmira College on September 18.
Wychock entered the game with 59 goals and left with 62 after the King’s victory. The Senior two time player of the week is also on pace to smash the King’s goals in a season (25) which she shares with 2006 graduate Linsday Sabo. Wychock already has 21 goals with ten games left to play.
Kane’s One Under Par Gives Him the Win
Junior golfer Mike Kane placed first at the Moravian Fall Invitational with a score of 70. Kane shot a 33 on the front nine and 37 on the back to win the match by 3 strokes.
King’s placed 4th overall with a total score of 311. Cabrini College won the tournament with a combined score of 300. Freshman Brian Kerstetter shot a 79(T-27), Sophomore Mike Wagner shot a 80 (T-32), and Sophomore Frank Shiel shot a 82 (T-42) for King’s. |
