Masses of college students from our area blended together this past Thursday at the fifth annual “Party on the Square.”

“It was a great event to get colleges involved in downtown Wilkes-Barre,” said Student Government President Gary Lambert.

Kings along with Wilkes University, Luzerne County Community College, Misercordia University and Penn State Wilkes-Barre came to the square for an evening of free haircuts, Dunkin Donuts samples, and political publicity. Local Bands, Our After, M80 and Go Go Gadjet, jammed out and provided alternative tunes.

Not far from the stage where the bands were playing, students gathered to try their skills on the mechanical bull.  Students also got the chance to Sample Bart & Urby’s wings, root beer from Wilkes-Barre’s own Lion Brewery and Domino’s pizza.

“It doesn’t hurt to make friends from other colleges,” said senior Loriah Webby. “It’s just a fun time to get together, and we’ve actually had a pretty big response, especially with the radio stations at the schools and the newspapers.
King’s captured the prize of the night, the “Collegetown Cup.”

“I was so proud of King’s when we won the cup and of everyone’s school spirit,” said Sophomore Colleen George.
The activities that determined the cup winners were the Domino’s pizza eating contest, mascot spirit contest, Weekender scavenger hunt, school banner contest and overall registration from each school.  King’s received the cup, which will remain on campus until next year’s party.

Student discount cards were handed out that included offers for more than 20 area businesses.  The local radio station, WSFX-FM, from LCCC held contests for students to win prizes. Another competition, at Schiels Family Market booth, was a game of “Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader?” There was plenty of politics to go around, with McCain and Congressman Lou Barletta tents serving helpful information on their campaigns.
