Monday September 22 will mark the beginning of Alcohol Awareness week at King’s. The weeklong program will include a number of activities, promoting a fun, alcohol-free environment across campus.
“The goal of Alcohol Awareness Week is to provide education about the negative effects of alcohol use and abuse,” organizer Fr. Tom Bertone said. “It is hoped that students will become better informed about the dangers of alcohol use, not just in terms of the effect on their bodies, but also in the way it affects people's actions in negative ways, which endanger others.”
This year’s theme that will be seen all around campus is S.A.F.E. (Supporting an Alcohol Free Environment). An assortment of programs on campus will touch on the varying affects of alcohol and how it influences everyone around the abuser.
Students will have the opportunity to sign a pledge to abstain from alcohol while pamphlets will be available, describing the legal ramifications of underage drinking and its effect on career opportunities.
Special presentations on Monday and Thursday will provide a unique look into the consequences of alcohol abuse.
“A representative from the State Police will be here on Monday, from 11 am to 1 pm to provide information and demonstrate the ways alcohol affects individuals with some interactive equipment,” Fr. Bertone said. “On Thursday, at 7 PM, Elaine Pasqua will orchestrate ‘Surviving The Party’, sponsored by the Athletic Department. She will be talking about the effects of alcohol on the body, esp. for athletes, and about the way it affects the choices we make in social and other situations.”
The week’s events will conclude on Friday night when “Last Call” kicks off at 7 PM. The concluding affair lasts until midnight, capped off by breakfast in the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center.
According to Fr. Bertone, there was a large response to the pledges and the “Last Call” event last year and the college hopes for continued success in 2008. Along with the cooperation of the student body, King’s hopes to see a fine turnout of students aiming to contribute to a safe and alcohol-free community. |
