Fall Sports Overview

King’s College fall sports teams have set the tone for King’s Athletics in 2008-2009. 

Before classes officially began on August 25, the fall sports teams returned to King’s to begin their preseason’s. Opening weekend brought many victories to King’s athletic program.

The defending MAC Freedom champions Lady Monarch field hockey team was picked to repeat as champions in the conference.  The field hockey team started off strong as they defeated Ramapo College 5-2 on the road.  Senior forward Debbie Wychock scored 3 goals and assisted on another to the lead the Lady Monarch’s.  On September 1, they defeated Neumann College 4-1 and on September 7, they shut out Arcadia University 4-0.  The defending champions will look to continue their win streak as they travel to Vassar College in New York for the Betty Richey Invitational tournament this weekend.

The Lady Monarch Volleyball team won their home tournament for the eighth straight year.  In the first match of the tournament the Lady Monarchs defeated Mount Saint Mary’s of New York 3-1.  King’s was led by junior Katelyn Malshefski who registered 25 kills on her way to winning MVP of the tournament.  Along with the MVP, Malshefski was voted MAC Freedom player of the week for her performance in the opening tournament.  King’s went on to defeated Misercordia by a score of 3-1, Marywood 3-1, and Wilkes University 4-1 to win the tournament.  The Volleyball team will play a home match Friday night against St. Elizabeth College at 7 p.m. at Scandlon Gymnasium.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams both placed 4th in the NEPA classic on August 29.   For the men, freshman Jeff Cort was 18th with a time of 21:04 while Sophomore Brandon Sweeney finished 22nd at 21:24. Senior Patrick Sammon was 32nd at 21:59 while Sophomore Ryan Glenn came in 38th at 22:26.  On the women’s side, sophomore Tori Potaski led King's with a second place finish time of 14:48 while senior Kelley Weidwald was 12th at 15:58. Sophomore Heather Elphick was 18th at 16:26 while freshman Molly Brown was 24th at 16:42.  Both the men and women will race at the Misericordia University Invitational on September 30.
