It’s that time of year again, when students are finally getting back into the swing of things with school, internships, clubs, and organizations. While this might mean the end of summer to most of us, the city of Wilkes-Barre is planning the biggest event of the year geared toward the college students. Party on the Square is back and has very much at stake for the local colleges.
The fifth annual Party on the Square, which has been coordinated by Bridget Giunta and Amy Fusco, will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. This year, Party on the Square will have a “Collegetown Cup” theme. This means that students from King’s College, Wilkes University, Misericordia University, Luzerne County Community College, and PSU Wilkes-Barre will be competing against each other in a series of events to bring home the actual Collegetown Cup. The cup is a trophy that will have the winning school’s name engraved on it and will be displayed at the winning campus until next year when they will be defending it.
The winning school will be determined by the students’ performance in four events. The events include a mechanical bull riding contest, the Domino’s pizza eating contest, a school spirit contest, and a scavenger hunt sponsored by The Weekender. The final factor in deciding which school wins the cup is attendance at the event.
If competition and school pride are not enough reason to attend, then the entertainment should be. Local favorites M-80, Go-Go Gadjet, and OurAfter will all be performing live. The music is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. and continue throughout the rest of the night.
Another benefit for the students is meeting with local businesses. Several local employers are sending representatives to Party on the Square to meet with students. They will have tables and booths set up so students can discuss the potential options of part-time work, internships, or even full-time employment after graduation. Many students, especially those from out of the area, have a great opportunity to see the local businesses in Wilkes-Barre and everyone that attends will have the chance to make important connections with professionals in their field of interest.
This year, Party on the Square is expected to be the largest one yet. Over 1,500 students from five local schools are predicted to attend. This wonderful event could not have been made possible without the city of Wilkes-Barre and more than 50 business sponsorships that helped fund it. King’s students are strongly encouraged to not only attend the event, but participate, as well. It is never too early to meet with potential employers and the first ever Collegetown Cup would be a great addition to our campus. |
