The Lady Monarchs softball team is looking forward to capturing their second straight MAC Freedom Conference championship in a row this weekend. The Lady Monarchs begin their playoff run when they take on Delaware Valley Friday at 1 PM at Wilkes University .
The softball team has been one of, if not, the most dominant King's sport of the last decade with nine straight NCAA tournament appearances. This year's squad looks to make it an even ten heading into this weekend.
The Lady Monarchs clinched the second seed in the tournament when they swept River Street rival Wilkes University last Saturday.
In the first game of the doubleheader, King's came out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two run single by Sophomore Lindsey Hoerner. Wilkes tied the game at two runs a piece in second inning. Then again in the third inning Hoerner came through with another two run single for her third and fourth RBI's.
Two seniors shined for King's in the victories as outfielder and co-captain Leanne Harvey went 4 for 4 at the plate, scored a run, and drove in one run. Fellow senior Kelsey Shreaves pitches a solid game going the distance while allowing just three hits and two earned runs on her way to her tenth win of the year.
In the second game Hoerner's bat did the talking again when she hit a two run home run in the first inning. Combined for the doubleheader she went 6 for 8 with four runs scored and six RBI. Hoerner also dominated on the mound striking out seven and allowing only three runs on seven hits.
The Lady Monarchs look to take this momentum into the MAC playoffs. The playoffs are a double elimination format and if King's beats Delaware Valley it will take on the winner of the FDU and the number one seed DeSales matchup. Tickets will be sold all day during the games with a student price set at $2 for all day and $3 for the entire weekend tournament. |
