Sample of a Writing Assignment for Chemistry

Assignment 1: Scavenger Hunt

1. The King’s College Library publishes a set of 27 study guides, on subjects ranging from “Using the Library for Research” (#1) to “Evaluating Motion Picture Reviews” (#27). We are specifically interested in two of them: “Preparing Abstracts and Annotations” (#14) [2] and “Documenting Sources, ACS Style” (#23) [3]. Obtain printed copies of these two study guides, and read them before you come to lab on Thursday. You need only read the first page of Study Guide #14, the part where abstracts are discussed (we will not deal with annotations).

2. In addition, the Library keeps an excellent web page, accessible from the King’s College homepage (www.kings.edu).

a) Starting from the web address above, find the page provided as a handout and print it out.

b) On the back of your printed sheet, list the web address of this page and the “clicks” needed to access it from your starting point.

3. The American Chemical Society (ACS) also keeps a very good web site (http://www.acs.org). What we are interested in here is the ACS publications page; specifically note the “search the journals” link in the upper left hand corner of this page; you will be using this link in the future.

a) Starting from the web address above, find the page provided as a handout and print it out.

b) On the back of your printed sheet, list the web address of this page and the “clicks” needed to access it from your starting point.
