Minutes of Curriculum and Teaching Committee Meeting

February 29, 2008

Present: Brian Pavlac (Chair), Kristi Concannon (Chair-elect), Margaret Corgan, Hamid Hosseini, Michael Little, Ed Ockerman, Paul Lindenmuth, Anne Massey

1. The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p. m.

2. The minutes of the February 21, 2008 were approved.

3. Liberal Arts Seminar:

  1. It was noted that the name of the Liberal Arts Seminar needs to be changed on the equivalency sheet.
  2. Although a question arose about how to ensure consistent membership on the Liberal Arts Seminar CART, ultimately the committee concluded that this will probably occur naturally and if not, can be handled during a review of the CARTs.

4. The status of International Business 241 remains in limbo.  C&T is awaiting a response from

    the Global CART before proceeding.

5. It was moved and seconded to accept the following guidelines for the apportionment of courses in these CARTs.  The motion passed.

6. C&T has been asked to review the one-credit CARP courses and will do this at a future

meeting.  Career Planning and Placement will attend to make their case.

7. Clarifications were made concerning the following course listings:

  1. Photography and Photography Lab together constitute a three-credit course, although students will sign up for the lab portion separate from the lecture.
  2. Photography will continue to be cross-listed, appearing as COMM 212 and 212L.
  3. Creative Writing 178 is not cross listed under English.

8. A motion was made and seconded to approve listing Philosophy before Theology in the

    Advising Planner.

9. A motion was made and seconded to accept the Advising Planner and

Equivalency Sheet, both of which can be found on the C&T web site.  The motion passed

9. The following suggestions were made for formatting the CART web-sites:

  1. A consistent title to welcome users to the site page of the CORE category
  2. Putting a category description and course list on the first page of each site
  3. Including information on the faculty in the CART, including name, title, office, e-mail, general contact information
  4. Holding an IITS meeting for CART coordinators

10. There was discussion about how various factors affect the CORE, including advanced

placement credits, exemptions, and CORE classes that are required for certain majors.

Advanced placement policies seemed generally adequate.  The discussion of exemptions

was tabled for a future meeting.  One question that arose was whether or not students may

replace 270 with another science course as is permitted with 270X.

11. The next meetings are scheduled for March 13 and April 10.

12. The meeting adjourned at 4:50 p. m.

Respectfully submitted,

Anne Massey
