Members of the Faculty,
As you know, last semester Faculty Council approved the proposed revisions to the Core, with the following exception:
"Concerning the revision largely affecting the current Civilization and Social Science categories, C&T must also find a workable compromise in consultation with project teams that best satisfies student needs, faculty interests, disciplinary priorities, major requirements, and institutional considerations. That compromise should be reported to and voted on by Faculty Council before the end of October 2007."
In the process of following through on that mandate from Faculty Council, C&T will be holding a special meeting on Friday, September 14 at 2 pm (place to be announced), where we will be seeking input from interested members of the faculty who teach in the current Social Science categories of the Core (Civilization: Historical Perspectives I & II, Human Behavior and Social Institutions I & II).
Faculty (individually or in groups such as departments, project teams, or portions thereof) will have the opportunity to present proposals about how we should carry out the Core revision in the Social Sciences areas. All proposals should conform to the resolution above and those passed at the last C&T meeting (wording approximate pending final approval of the minutes):
1. Any proposal on Social Science must cover at most the four new categories of Interdisciplinary Social Science, American Studies, Civilizations: Historical Perspectives, and Contemporary Global Studies.
2. In the spirit of Core revisions, each of the four categories: Interdisciplinary Social Science, American Studies, Civilizations: Historical Perspectives, and Contemporary Global Studies should include more than one course option.
Any proposals should be sent to me, Chair of C&T, in written form by noon, Thursday September 13, so that they can be copied for committee members and presentations can be scheduled. Length of presentations will be determined as time permits.
This special meeting is only part of the process. We encourage all faculty to talk among one another, in departments, project teams, and/or divisions, with members of faculty governance. I, myself, am more than eager to discuss the issues. Please contact Brian Pavlac, Chair C&T, at your convenience.
