OCTOBER 31, 2007CLERICI, MALSHEFSKI
NAMED TO ALL-FREEDOM VOLLEYBALL SQUAD
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's
volleyball team has had players selected to the 2007 All-Freedom
Conference team, the Middle Atlantic Conferences office announced
Wednesday.
Named to the team was sophomore Kat Clerici, who was a first-team
selection, and sophomore Kaitlyn Malshefski, who was a second-team
choice.
The duo helped King's to a 21-13
regular-season mark as well as a spot in the Freedom Conference
Tournament semi-finals slated for Wednesday.
Clerici
(Seaford, NY/Seaford), who was a second-team pick as a freshman,
enjoyed an outstanding season for King's. The 5-11 middle hitter has
posted team-highs with 370 kills, a .400 hitting percentage, and 115
total blocks. She has also contributed with 51 digs, 29 service
aces, and 14 assists. Clerici was named the Freedom Conference
"Player of the Week" twice during the year, earning the honor
September 4 and September 10.
Malshefski
(Nanticoke/Nanticoke Area), who was also a second-team choice
last season, overcame a slow start due to a leg injury and was
limited to just front line play. She returned to form at midseason
where she helped lead King's playoff charge with her outstanding
all-around game. A 5-11 outside hitter, Malshefski ranked second on
the team with 275 kills while adding a .270 hitting percentage, 138
digs, 25 aces, 21 blocks, and 14 assists.
"We are very happy for both Kat and Kaitlyn as they are talented
players who have played a big part of our success," King's coach
Bernie Kachinko stated. "Kat worked extremely hard over the
summer and came back in great shape and has been a force in the
middle all year with her hitting and blocking. She has really come
into her own as a middle hitter. Kaitlyn had a lot of problems early
in the year with her quadriceps and did not have her normal level of
mobility and jumping ability so she could not play a full rotation.
When her legs started to get better, her level of play increased
each week and she has been great the last part of the season."
