MALSHEFSKI, CLERICI NAMED SECOND-TEAM ALL-FREEDOM CONFERENCE

WILKES-BARRE -- King's College freshmen volleyball standouts Kaitlyn Malshefski (Nanticoke/Nanticoke Area) and Kat Clerici (Seaford, NY/Seaford) have been named to the 2006 All-Freedom Conference team, the MAC Office announced Thursday.

With King's losing five starters from last season and the 2006 squad starting four first-year players most of the season, the Lady Monarch rookie duo played major roles in helping King's to a 19-12 record and a spot in the Freedom Conference playoffs.

Malshefski, a 5-11 outside hitter, led King's with 358 kills and 274 digs, while adding 46 total blocks, 32 service aces, and 19 assists. She also registered a fine .315 hitting percentage while posting 3.58 kills per-game. Malshefski posted a match-high 23 kills in King's Freedom Conference semi-final loss to Scranton while adding 22 digs against Albright on September 8.

Clerici, a 5-11 middle hitter, totaled 323 kills, 21 service aces, 171 digs, while registering a team-high 108 total blocks. She also posted a team-best .337 hitting percentage while compiling 3.23 kills per-game. Clerici had a season-high 18 kills in a match twice during the season against Lincoln University and William Paterson College. She also registered 11 total blocks in an early-season victory over Marywood.

"We are very happy to see Kaitlyn and Kat recognized for their outstanding seasons and both are very deserving," King's coach Bernie Kachinko stated. "When I recruited both players, I knew from the beginning they would become impact players for us and they certainly made a difference right away. They are the cornerstones of where our program will be headed the next three years. The best part is that both Kaitlyn and Kat are just beginning to realize their potential and they are going to become even better players than they are right now."
