KING’S EARNS PLAYOFF BERTH WITH VOLLEYBALL WIN OVER WILKES

Wilkes-Barre – King’s College fought off a stubborn Wilkes University volleyball team on Tuesday night in the Marts Center to earn a berth in the upcoming Freedom Conference playoffs.

The Lady Monarchs scored a 30-18, 32-30, 31-29 victory to improve to 18-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference.  They will be the number-four seed when the playoffs begin next week.  Wilkes sees their records fall to 6-22 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Freshman Kaitlyn Malshefski led the way for King’s with 19 kills, 12 digs and three blocks.  Fellow rookie Kat Clerici chipped in with 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks, while freshman Samantha Page finished with seven kills.  Freshman Danielle Belfanti handled the setting chores for the Lady Monarchs and handed out 31 assists with 12 digs. Senior Jessica Luedeman added eight assists, four aces, 15 service points, and six digs.

Wilkes was led by Katherine Harrington’s 13 kills and seven digs.  Kristen Linhart contributed 11 kills and a team-high 13 digs.  Julie Page added nine kills and six digs, while both LeeAnn Searfoss and Katherine Simons had six kills.  Searfoss also added nine digs and two blocks, while Simons had six digs.  Lady Colonels setter Nicole Hahn ended the night with 37 assists, seven digs and five service aces.

King's will return to action Wednesday when the lady Monarchs host St. Elizabeth's at 7:00 p.m. in the team's home finale. King's was slated to host Rutgers-Camden on Friday but the match was cancelled as Rutgers-Camden is unable to field a team after a rash of recent injuries.
