GERMAN CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY WITH VICTORY AS KING'S
VOLLEYBALL TEAM DOWNS WILKES 3-1
WILKES-BARRE -- It couldn't have been a better
birthday present for King's College volleyball standout Annie German.
Led by German's powerful play from her middle hitter
position, King's broke open a 1-1 tie by dominating the final two games as
the Lady Monarchs posted a 3-1 triumph over gritty Wilkes University
Tuesday in an MAC Freedom Conference opening match for both teams in
Scandlon Gymnasium.
The Lady Monarchs won the first game 30-22 before
Wilkes led throughout the second game to post a 30-25 triumph. King's, the
defending Freedom Conference champion, would regroup and won the last two
games by identical 30-15 scores. With the victory, the Lady Monarchs
improved to 8-4 overall while Wilkes slipped to 6-7.
King's trailed 7-4 in the third game before freshman
Elena DiGrado reeled off eight consecutive points on her strong jump
serve. The Lady Monarchs would outscore Wilkes 26-8 to secure the third
game and take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth game, King's jumped out to a quick
9-3 lead and never looked back.
King's was paced by German who celebrated her 21st
birthday with a team-high 21 kills while adding 17 digs and four blocks.
Senior Jessica McVey followed with 17 kills, 23 digs, five service aces
and four blocks. DiGrado was solid with 16 service points, including six
aces, while contributing 13 digs and eight kills. Jessica Luedeman

power Juniata.
