LADY MONARCHS CLAIM FIFTH STRAIGHT KING'S INVITATIONAL TITLE

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's volleyball team fought off a scrappy Marywood University squad en route to capturing a fifth straight championship at the King's Invitational Tournament Sunday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

King's and Marywood entered the Saturday morning pairing with identical 2-0 marks and the Lady Monarchs escaped with a 3-2 victory on the way to claiming the tournament crown. King's, which defeated Marywood 30-16, 28-30, 30-17, 31-33, 15-11, then defeated Keystone 3-0 to improve to 4-0 on the year. Marywood would finish second in the tournament with a 3-1 mark while Wilkes was third at 2-2.

Wilkes fell to Marywood 3-1 before downing Misericordia 3-0. Misericordia went 1-3 after besting Keystone 3-0 following its loss to Wilkes. Keystone finished 0-4 after losses to King's and Misericordia.

King's was led by Jessica McVey who posted 29 kills, 31 digs, and 15 service points on Saturday. Annie German followed with 26 digs and 37 kills, including the 1,000th kill of her collegiate career in the final match against Keystone. Lauren Foster posted 45 assists and 19 service points, while Jessica Kandefer added 11 kills. Elena DiGrado contributed 30 service points, 10 aces, and seven kills, while Katie Carr chipped in with 20 digs.

Marywood was led by Melissa Kalymun with 11 kills, 11 assists, and four aces. Michelle Oros added 15 kills, 11 blocks, and five aces. Ann Connelly followed with 12 kills and 10 blocks. Kate Puschak posted 15 kills while Lauren Warburton dished out 23 assists.

Wilkes was paced by Vieselmeyer with 23 kills and 30 digs, while Megan Riley followed with 23 kills. Nicole Hahn distributed 81 assists with five aces while Amber Brennan contributed 38 digs. Jill Focht contributed 18 kills four blocks, and four aces while Jeanine Barber totaled 19 kills and 25 digs.

Misericordia was led by Jen Jones with 21 assists, 12 digs, and seven kills. Jessica Klimas followed with 16 assists and eight digs. Kelly Coppage added 13 kills and 10 digs while Nicole Smith chipped in with 13 kills.

McVey was named the tournament most valuable player while German also gained a spot on the team. The remainder of the all-tournament team included Vieselmeyer of Wilkes and Marywood teammates Connelly, Oros, and Kalymun.
