KING'S, MARYWOOD VOLLEYBALL TEAMS TAKE FIRST-DAY TOURNEY LEAD

After the first day of the annual King's College Volleyball Invitational Tournament, the host Lady Monarchs and Marywood University concluded the opening round of the King's Volleyball Tournament with identical 2-0 marks.

King's, looking to win its own tournament for the fifth straight year, defeated cross-town rival Wilkes University 30-19, 30-28, 30-22, before gaining a 30-16, 30-21, 30-17 triumph over College Misericordia. Marywood, meanwhile, posted a 30-26, 30-18, 30-18 win over Misericordia before securing a 30-12, 30-19, 30-11 victory over Keystone College.

King's was led by the senior tandem of Jessica McVey and Annie German. McVey posted 25 kills, 23 digs, 25 service points, and 11 service aces while German was equally dominant with 24 kills, 19 digs, and 18 service points. Lauren Foster dished out 50 assists, while Jessica Luedeman added 16 assists. Elena DiGrado had 11 kills and 14 service points, Katie Carr registered 12 service points, while Jessica Kandefer chipped with eight kills

Marywood was led by Kate Puschak with 15 kills while Ann Connelly added 12 kills and five aces. Lauren Warburton chipped in with 23 assists.

Wilkes went 1-1 on the day, following its loss to King's with a 30-12, 30-19, 30-11 victory over Keystone. The Lady Colonels were led by sophomore Alicia Vieselmeyer with 13 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Jillian Focht added eight kills and seven aces, while junior Megan Reilly followed with eight kills and three aces. Freshman setter Nicole Hahn distributed 27 assists to aid the Lady Colonel cause.

Misericordia was paced by Jennifer Jones with 23 assists and eight digs while Kelly Coppage followed with 13 kills, 12 digs, and three blocks. Jessica Klimas added 14 assists and 10 digs, while Nicole Smith posted seven kills.

Keystone was led by Reba Ronk with seven assists while Michelle Vodice added eight digs.

The tournament will continue Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with Wilkes playing Marywood. At 1:00, King's will then face Marywood while Misericordia will meet Wilkes. At 3:00 p.m. King's will play Keystone while Wilkes battles Misericordia.
