KING'S VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN ONEONTA TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP

(McVey First to reach 1,000 digs in two years)

ONEONTA, NY -- The King's College women's volleyball team fell painfully short of its quest for a third straight title at the Oneonta State Invitational Volleyball Tournament when the Lady Monarchs dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 verdict to host Oneonta State.

King's, which had won its first two matches on Friday, advanced to the championship match by sweeping Utica 30-14, 30-17, 30-18 in the semi-finals.

In the championship, Oneonta captured the first game 30-24 before King's came back to sweep games two and three by scores of 30-22 and 30-27 to take a 1-2 lead. Oneonta would rally from a 14-6 deficit to win game-four 30-26, then edged the Lady Monarchs 15-12 in the fifth and deciding game.

With the loss, King's fell to 13-9 on the year while Oneonta improved to 12-10.

Lady Monarch seniors Jessica McVey and Annie German were both named to the all-tournament team. McVey posted 49 digs, 34 kills and 25 service points in two matches on Saturday. In the process, the King's standout became the first player in school history to record her 1,000th dig in just two seasons at King's. McVey transferred to King's a year ago from Illinois Central Community College and now totals 1,020 digs.

German, meanwhile, was equally outstanding with 34 kills and 33 digs. Freshman setter Jessica Luedeman distributed 95 assists to aid the Lady Monarch cause.

King's will return to action Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when the Lady Monarchs host arch-rival Scranton in a crucial MAC Freedom Conference match which figured to greatly impact the post-season conference playoff picture.
