KING'S VOLLEYBALL WINS WASHINGTON COLLEGE TOURNAMENT, SETS SCHOOL
RECORD WITH 18TH STRAIGHT WIN
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The King's College women's volleyball team set a news
school record with its 18th consecutive victory as the Lady Monarchs
continued to roll by winning the two-day Washington College Invitational
Tournament Saturday in Chestertown, Md.
King's, which posted consecutive 3-0 wins over host Washington and Mary
Washington on Friday, posted three more 3-0 wins on Saturday to claim its
fourth tournament championship of the season.
Saturday, King's defeated Gallaudet University 30-17, 30-26, 30-10, then
gained a 30-16, 30-19, 30-13 victory over Albright College. In the
championship, King's gained its most impressive won over the season
against NCAA Division II Pitt-Johnstown by scores of 30-27, 30-24, 30-27.
The victory proved sweet for the Lady Monarchs who lost to
Pitt-Johnstown 3-0 in the tournament final a year ago, one of just four
losses King's would suffer in a 29-4 season ion 2001.
Junior outside hitter Jessica McVey was named the tournament most valuable
player after a brilliant tournament. McVey set a new school record against
Gallaudet with 15 service aces in the match. Her totals in the the
Saturday matches include 50 service points, 24 aces, 26 digs, and 26
kills.
Senior setter Katie Baffone was also named to the
all-tournament team after registering 101 assists, 25 service points, 20
digs, and seven aces. Against Albright, Baffone posted the 1,000th
dig of her career, becoming just the seventh player in school history to
reach the milestone.
Faith O'Dell also paced King's with 42 kills, 38 digs, and 25 service
points. Jill Leibman added 27 service points, 14 aces, and 10 kills. Annie
German as also outstanding with 29 kills and 15 digs, while Tara Holly and
Katie Carr chipped in with 30 and 14 digs respectively.
King's improved to a perfect 18-0 on the year and broke the school record
of 16 straight wins set last season.
The Lady Monarchs will travel to Lycoming Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in an
important MAC Freedom Conference matchup.
