LADY MONARCHS CLAIM FOURTH STRAIGHT KING'S VOLLEYBALL INVITATIONAL
CROWN
(Baffone Named Tournament MVP for Record Fourth Straight Year)
WILKES-BARRE -- History was made at the annual King's
College Women's Volleyball Tournament Saturday when senior setter Katie
Baffone (Newark, De./St. Mark's) was named most valuable player for a
record fourth consecutive year and the Lady Monarchs won their own
tournament for the fourth straight year as well Saturday in Scandlon
Gymnasium.
After posting respective 3-0 wins over Wilkes and Misericordia on Friday,
the Lady Monarchs swept Marywood and Baptist Bible 3-0 Saturday to win all
12 games it played in at the event. The Lady Monarchs bested Marywood
30-11, 30-25, 30-9 before ousting Baptist Bible 30-17, 30-20, 30-21 to
improve to 4-0 on the year.
In second-day contests, Baptist Bible defeated Misericordia 30-18, 30-9,
30-25; Wilkes downed Marywood 25-30, 30-27, 32-30, 30-25; before emerging
victorious over Misericordia 30-21, 23-30, 24-30, 30-21, 15-12.
Baffone led the way with 59 assists, nine service aces, 26 service points,
and 30 digs in Saturday's matches. Faith O'Dell followed with 26 kills and
27 digs; Jessica McVey added 21 kills and 24 digs; Annie German
contributed 18 kills and 19 service points; while Jill Leibman rounded out
the offensive attack with 15 kills and 23 service points. King's was also
aided defensively by Tara Holly and Katie Carr with 16 and 14 digs
respectively.
Wilkes was led by Kelly Svecz with 26 kills, while Alicia Vieselmeyer
followed with 25 kills, 17 digs, and nine blocks. Larissa Dobransky had 19
kills while Jillian Focht contributed 16 kills and 11 digs. Megan
Riley distributed 42 assists with 11 kills, while Jeanine Barber chipped
in with 38 assists and 12 digs.
Misericordia was guided by Kelly Coppage with 15 kills and 21 digs. Amber
Chadwick followed with 16 kills and 13 digs. Ashley Dixon added 10 kills,
six aces, and 35 digs, while setters Katie Gorgas and Jen Jones combined
for 45 assists and 30 digs.
Joining Baffone on the all-tournament squad were Lady Monarch teammates
O'Dell, German, and McVey, along with Carrie Brooks of Baptist Bible and
Marywood's Michele Oros.
King's will next travel to Lebanon Valley College Wednesday for a 7:00
p.m. contest in Annville.
