The
womens volleyball program has grown steadily since its inception
in 1972. Since head coach Bernie Kachinko
took over the program in 1989, King’s has emerged as a force in the MAC
Freedom Conference and is a consistent playoff contender. Kachinko is the winningest coach in King's history
with a 342-227 mark entering the 2008 season.
In 2002, Kachinko led the Lady Monarchs to a spectacular season as King's
finished with a school-record 39-2 mark, the MAC Freedom Conference
Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament
where the team reached the "Sweet 16". The 2002 squad posted
the second best record nationally among all collegiate volleyball teams,
regardless of division.
The
2001 squad was 29-4 season and finished second in the MAC Freedom Conference
Championships. In 2000, King's enjoyed a 34-3 mark, the MAC Freedom
Conference title, and an NCAA national tournament berth.
The success of the program is traced back
to the early 1990's when Kachinko began to rebuild the program.
In 1993, the Lady Monarchs were 25-7 and won the MAC Freedom League
title. The 1994 and 1995 teams reached the MAC tournament semi-finals;
while his 1998 Lady Monarchs also qualified for the MAC playoffs. The
1999 Lady Monarch squad completed a 24-6 record and advanced to the
quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament.
Under
Kachinkos leadership, 35 players have been named MAC all-stars
since 1990 with four earning most valuable player honors. Lady
Monarch players have also been selected
as MAC Freedom Conference "Rookie of the Year" in 1998, 1999,
and 2000. Since the 2000 season, seven King's players have been named
to the AVCA Mid-Atlantic Regional All-American squad.
The volleyball team has also achieved a high
level of academic excellence at 40 players have been named to the MAC
All-Academic team since 1993.
King's typically plays a schedule consisting
of 35-40 matches including at least five tournaments. The Lady
Monarchs also play host to their own annual season-opening King's College Invitational
Tournament.
King's competes for an opportunity to qualify for the Freedom Conference
Championships as the top four teams from within the conference earn
post-season berths.
In 1999, the NCAA restructured its national tournament criteria and
began awarding the Freedom Conference winner an automatic berth
into the NCAA Division III National Championships, further increasing
Kings chances of competing at the national level.
King's women's volleyball plays its home games
in Scandlon Gymnasium, a 3,200-seat
facility which stands as one of the largest in the MAC.
