MICHAEL NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE NATIONAL ACADEMIC ALL-ACADEMIC
TEAM
WILKES-BARRE – King's College tennis star Megan Michael (Forty
Fort/Wyoming Valley West) has been selected to the 2005 ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-American Women’s At-Large Team as a first-team
selection. The team was selected by the College Sports Information
Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Michael was one of just 15 individuals around the nation named to the
at-large first-team, which includes student-athletes from bowling, crew,
fencing, golf, gymnastics, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle,
skiing, tennis, and water polo.
Two weeks ago, Michael was named to the ESPN The Magazine District II
All-Academic Team to earn a place on the national ballot. To be
nominated for academic all-American a student-athlete must be at least a
sophomore in class standing with a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average
and be a starter or significant reserve on her team.
Michael, who played number-one singles and doubles four straight years
on King's women's tennis team, graduated in May with a perfect 4.0
grade-point average and was co-class valedictorian at the college.
Michael, who was named to the Dean’s List every semester, was president
of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society and was a member of the
college's Aquinas Honor Society, Pre-Law Society, and Circle K Club. She
was selected to King's Phi Sigma Tau Philosophy Honor Society as well as
the Delta Epsilon Sigma Catholic Honor Society. Michael was also named
to the National Dean’s List, an honor bestowed on less than one-percent
of students in the United States.
Michael was also active in the community, serving as a volunteer worker
at Little Flower Clothes Closet, March of Dimes, Osterhout Free Library,
and Wilkes-Barre Special Olympics. She worked as an Effective Writing
teacher in King’s Writing Center while also serving as a Peer Tutor. She
was also a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic selection.
In tennis, Michael finished second all-time in singles wins at King’s
with 43-23 record and was a three-time MAC All-Star selection. She will
attend The Pennsylvania State University Law School in the fall.
"We at King's are very proud of Megan and all she has accomplished as a
student-athlete as well as her numerous off-campus activities," said
King's sports information director Bob Ziadie, who nominated Michael for
the award. "Megan excelled in everything she did and she is a great
example of what can be accomplished with hard work and dedication. She
enjoyed four great years at King's and has been a true asset to the
college community. We wish her well as she prepares to enter law
school."
