WILKES WOMEN'S SOCCER POSTS 5-0 WIN OVER KINGS
WILKES-BARRE -- Catherine Simone scored three goals and added an assist
to lead the Wilkes University women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over
host King's College Wednesday at Betzler Fields.
With the win, Wilkes, ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, improved
to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in MAC Freedom Conference play. King's slipped to
5-5 and 0-2 in league action.
Simone opened the scoring at 36:02 of the first half off an assist from
Christina Waldele to give the Lady Colonels a 1-0 lead. Rebecca Duttry
then scored unassisted at 8:14, before Simone tallied her second goal
off a pass from Amanda Vernon just 1:42 later as Wilkes took a 3-0 lead
at the break.
In the second half, Wilkes would extend the lead when Simone netted her
third goal off an assist from Kristi Barsby with 13:17 remaining. Gina
Robinson scored the game's final goal off a Simone assist with 1:48
left.
Wilkes outshot King's 21-4 and enjoyed a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
King's goalie Christina Uhl made nine saves for the Lady Monarchs while
Wilkes goalie Liz Pauly and Jessica Berkey each played a half to combine
on the shutout win. Paul Made two stops while Berkey chipped in with one
save.
King's will return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest at
DeSales.
