2007 Season Preview....
KING'S WOMEN'S SOCCER
RINGS IN A NEW ERA
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's
soccer team will begin a new and exciting era in 2007 as first-year head
coach Chris George begins his first season with the program.
A crop of experienced players return to the squad along with a group of
freshmen looking to step in and contribute immediately. While
injuries have slowed the team down in the pre-season, King's figures to
be a much improved squad once its full compliment of players return to
health.
Leading
the list of veterans is junior midfielder Lisa McMillan (Massapequa,
NY/Massapequa) who
became the first Lady Monarch player ever to be named first-team
All-Freedom Conference as a freshman and sophomore. In her two years
with the program, McMillan (left) has tallied 51 points on 23 goals and
five assists.
Senior midfielder Kaitlyn Wilcox (Effort, PA/Pocono Mt.) is also
back after finishing third on the team in scoring last season with 10
points on three goals and four assists after registering 20
points on seven goals and six assists as a sophomore. Sophomore
midfielder Sara Coletta
(Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) is another quality returnee who
has earned team co-captain honors in just her second season. A year ago
she scored six points on two goals an two assists as a freshmen.
Senior Annie Drimones (Englewood Cliffs,
NJ/Academy of Holy Angels) has been a top defender for the past
three years but will moved to forward this season as George will attempt
to take advantage of her outstanding speed and athletic ability.
Drimones (right) saw some offensive action late in the 2006 season and
provided a glimpse of her potential as she came through by scoring two
goals with one assist.
Anchoring the defense will be junior Catherine
Scerra (Dunellen, NJ/Dunellen) who has started 36-of-38 games in her
career, scoring 20 points on eight goals and four assists.
Sophomore midfielder Kelly Puffenberger (Dallas, PA/Bishop
Hoban) performed well as a rookie and will be expected to provide
quality play. Sophomore forward
Erin Tanner (Dallas, PA/Bishop O'Reilly) will also add depth up
front. Sophomore Erin
Wetherhold (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) will be a
factor on defense while sophomore
Brittany Morgan (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks Central)
will battle for time in the midfield.
Providing depth in King's defense is junior
Mary Malloy (Somerdale, NJ/Bishop Eustace).
Sophomore Rachel Donatiello (Hatfield, PA/North Penn)
was a midfielder last season and
also served as the backup goalie. In 2007 she will most likely be the
team's starting goal keeper. Last year Donatiello (left)
posted a 0.65 goals against average with five saves in 140 minutes in
net.
Six freshmen join the program looking to contribute right away. At
forward, Xavier Ortega (Bayshore, NYBrentwood), Kristi Ronyack
(Bethlehem/Northampton), and Alison Beck (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware
Valley) all hope to provide offensive punch. Defensively,
Meghan O'Kane (Telford/Lansdale Catholic) and Meghan Snavely
(Sugar Run/Wyalusing) will challenge for time. Michele
Matera ((Bayshore, NY/Brentwood) will most likely serve as the
backup to Donatiello in goal.
