KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO SCRANTON 14-8
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's women's lacrosse
opened up a 4-1 lead but visiting University of Scranton outscored the
Lady Monarchs 13-4 the rest of the way to post a 14-8 victory in a
Middle Atlantic Conference matchup Wednesday at Betzler Fields.
With the win, Scranton improved to 4-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC.
King's, meanwhile, slipped to 2-8 and 1-6 in league games.
King's built a 3-0 lead with 18:25 remaining in the first half on goals
by Lindsay Sabo, Keri Niedt, and Erica Kovats. After Scranton's Jackie
Messantonio converted a pass from Megan Quinn to get the Lady Royals on
the board at the 14:11 mark, Sabo scored again to give King's a 4-1 lead
with 13:17 in the half.
But Scranton responded when Messantonio and Heather Melone netted two
goals each to put Scranton on top 5-4 with just 0:30 left in the half.
In the second half, Melissa Gates scored off a Sabo assist just 1:16
into the final stanza to tie the score at 5-5, but Diana Rocklein and
Melone scored back-to-back goals to give Scranton a 7-5 advantage with
25:13 left in the contest.
Michelle O'Brien would score for King's to cut the lead to 7-6 with
20:53 on the clock, but Messantonio scored her fourth goal of the game
to push Scranton ahead 8-6 with 20:40 remaining. Sabo would net
her third goal of the contest for the Lady Monarchs to close to within
8-7 with 13:27 left, , but Scranton would outscore King's 6-1 the rest
of the way to secure the victory.
Messantonio finished with five goals and assist while Melone netted
three goals with one assist. Kristin Marquino and Diana Rocklein added
two goals each for the Lady Royals. Scranton goalie Kristina Goetz
made eight saves in net.
King's, which played the game with second-leading scorer Sarah Veneski
who was injured in practice Tuesday, was led by Sabo with three goals
with one assist. Reanna Lachner and O'Brien had one goal and one assist
apiece. Heather Kelly made 10 saves in goal for the Lady Monarchs
who host Arcadia University Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
