KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE DROPS TRIPLE-OVERTIME
LOSS TO MESSIAH
(Kelly Sets Single-Game Saves Mark)
WILKES-BARRE -- Katie DiRico scored the game
winning goal with just 0:39 remaining in the third overtime period as
defending Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse champion Messiah
College escaped an upset bid with a 14-13 victory over host King's
College Wednesday at Betzler Fields.
With the win, Messiah improved to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in MAC play.
King's, meanwhile, slipped to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the MAC after
dropping its second straight 14-13 decision to a top MAC program. King's
fell to Drew University by the same score on Thursday.
King's held a 12-9 lead following a goal by Lindsay Sabo with 2:01 left
in the contest. Messiah, however, came storming back with three goals
over the final two minutes of play and sent the game into overtime when
Jackie Dando struck net with just 0:32 remaining.
Messiah would take a 13-12 lead when Abby Boyd scored with 2:33 left in
the first over-time frame, but King's tied the game at 13-13 on Sabo's
seventh goal of the game with 1:46 on the clock. After a scoreless second
overtime frame, the teams would begin sudden-victory in the third overtime
period.
There, King's committed a costly turnover and Messiah capitalized as DiRico snuck the ball just inside the left post from a difficult angle
to pull out the victory for the Falcons.
Sabo led King's with seven goals and two assists while Reanna Lachner
followed with two goals and one assist. Sarah Veneski netted two goals
while Erica Kovats scored one goal and Sarah Alesso had a pair of
assists. Heather Kelly was outstanding in goal for King's as she made a
school-record 25
saves as Messiah held a 45-38 advantage in shots. She bettered the
previous mark of 24 saves by Patti Telschow against Susquehanna in 1997.
Bethany Moskevitz had four goals for Messiah while Dando and DiRico
added three goals apiece.
King's returns to action Tuesday following Easter Break when the Lady Monarchs travel
cross-town to face
Wilkes University at 4:00 p.m. at Ralston Field.
