WOMEN'S LAXERS FALL JUST SHORT OF UPSET OF DREW,
14-13
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's
lacrosse team put forth a valiant effort by fell just short in pulling a
big upset of Drew University Thursday at Betzler Fields. The
Rangers would score two of the last three goals to pull out a thrilling
14-13 win.
With the victory, Drew, one of the top programs annually in the Middle
Atlantic Conference, improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the MAC. KIng's,
meanwhile, slipped to 1-5 and 0-3.
KIng's would build a 6-3 half-time lead on the strength of two goals
each by Erica Kovats and Michelle O'Brien. But Drew scored a pair of
critical goals with under a minute to play as Alexandra Bailly and Megan
Fogerty struck net with 0:33 and 0:20 left to bring the Rangers to
within 6-5 at the break. Those two goals would later come back to haunt
King's.
The Lady Monarchs would use an unassisted goal by Sarah Veneski just
1:20 into the second half to give KIng's a 7-5 lead, but Drew would
score the next four goals, taking a 9-7 lead on a Courtney Cunningham
goal with 22:17 remaining.
King's answered with two more goals from O'Brien and another by Keri
Niedt as the Lady Monarchs would recapture a 10-9 lead 15:26 on the
clock.
With the game tied at 12-12 following a Veneski goal with 4:40 left,
Drew answered right away when Lindsey Perno scored just 0:12 later.
Perno would then score off a Cunningham pass with 1:45 left to give the
Rangers a 14-12 lead.
King's would win the draw and Veneski raced down the field to score just
0:11 later to bring the Lady Monarchs to within 14-13 with 1:45 on the
clock. But Drew would win the ensuing draw and ran out the clock
to hold onto the victory.
King's outshot Drew 29-27 and held a 20-13 advantage in ground balls.
Veneski and O'Brien finished with four goals each while Kovats finished
with two scores. Lindsay Sabo added one goal and two assists. heather
Kelly made 12 saves in goal for the Lady Monarchs.
Bailly and Perno netted four goals each for Drew while Cunningham added
three. Stef Rutkowski stopped six shots for the Rangers.
