KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO SCRANTON IN MAC PLAYOFF OPENER

SCRANTON, Pa.—Junior midfielder Jackie Messantonio scored seven goals and the host University of Scranton scored six unanswered goals over the final 4:20 of play to down King’s College, 17-8, in the quarterfinals of the Middle Atlantic Conference tournament Tuesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

With the win, Scranton improved to 11-5 on the year and will face top-seeded Messiah College in the second-round on Thursday.  King's ends its season with a 9-6 mark while earning its second straight conference playoff berth.

Freshman attacker Madelyn Sminkey contributed four goals and an assist and freshman midfielder Diana Rocklein (had two goals, an assists, 10 ground balls and six draw controls as the Royals improved to 11-5.  Scranton, which also received two goals and an assist from sophomore attacker Kaitlyn Mimnaugh and a goal apiece from senior co-captain Kerri Kornobis and sophomore Jennifer Frey.

King’s was led by junior midfielder Lindsay Sabo with five goals and sophomore midfielder Grace King who added two scores.

The final score was far from a true indication of the game.  Scranton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and led 6-2 at intermission, but Sabo got the Lady Monarchs rolling in the second-half by scoring three straight goals during a seven-minute span to keep King’s within striking distance.

The Lady Monarchs made things interesting late in the second half, when sophomore attacker Keri Niedt converted on a free position to cut Scranton’s lead to 11-8 at the 53:08 mark.

After a timeout, the Royals took over by scoring six straight goals over the final minutes to set the final score.   Messantonio scored twice and Minmaugh, Frey, Kornobis and Sminkey once as Scranton ended the Lady Monarchs’ bid to pull off the come-from-behind victory.

Sophomore goalie Heather Kelly was solid for King’s, stopping a game-high 18 shots, including 13 in the second-half, while Scranton senior Courtney Enman made 11 saves.
