KING'S WOMEN'S LAXERS DOWN WIDENER FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1999 TO KEEP
PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's lacrosse team kept its
playoff hopes alive as the Lady Monarchs posted a 12-9 victory over
visiting Widener University Thursday at Betzler Fields.
With the win, King's first over Widener since 1999, the Lady Monarchs
improved to 8-5 overall and 4-5 in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
Widener, meanwhile, fell to 3-11 and 2-7.
King's would score the game's first goal when Lindsay Sabo struck net
just 0:58 into the contest. Widener countered when Allison Glavin scored
off a Tricia Lynch assist at 27:18 and Tara Krasley converted a pass
from Kerry Shulz just 1:52 later to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
King's would respond with six unanswered goals when Sabo and Grace King
scored twice each, followed by goals from Keri Niedt and Eric Kovats to
give the Lady Monarchs a 7-2 advantage. Krasley would get Widener back
on the board at 7:52, but King's answered with a goal by Kovats with
3:48 remaining in the half as the Lady Monarch lead grew to 8-3. The
Pioneers would score a much-needed goal when Lynch found the back of the
bet with just 0:06 remaining in the opening stanza to bring Widener to
within 8-4 at the break.
The Pioneers would quickly cut the lead to 8-6 when Glavin and Lynch
scored consecutive goals in the opening 3:20 of the second half. But
King's would respond with a decisive four-goal surge when Kim Murray,
Niedt, Sabo, and King each scored to put eh Lady Monarchs on top 12-6
with 8:23 left in the contest.
Widener would attempt to battle back but a pair of goals from Krasley
and another by Glavin cut the lead to 12-9 with 2:07 left but the
Pioneers would draw no closer.
Both teams took 28 shots while Widener held a 26-22 edge in ground
balls.
King's goalie Heather Kelly made nine saves to pick up the victory. Sabo
led King's with four goals and one assist while King added three goals.
Kovats and Niedt chipped in with two each for the Lady Monarchs
Pioneer keeper Brianna Tarry made 11 stops. Krasley netted three goals
to led Widener while Glavin added three.
King's will conclude the regular-season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m.
contest at Moravian College in Bethlehem.
