KING'S WOMEN'S LAXERS DOWN WIDENER FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1999 TO KEEP PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's lacrosse team kept its playoff hopes alive as the Lady Monarchs posted a 12-9 victory over visiting Widener University Thursday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, King's first over Widener since 1999, the Lady Monarchs improved to 8-5 overall and 4-5 in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Widener, meanwhile, fell to 3-11 and 2-7.

King's would score the game's first goal when Lindsay Sabo struck net just 0:58 into the contest. Widener countered when Allison Glavin scored off a Tricia Lynch assist at 27:18 and Tara Krasley converted a pass from Kerry Shulz just 1:52 later to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.

King's would respond with six unanswered goals when Sabo and Grace King scored twice each, followed by goals from Keri Niedt and Eric Kovats to give the Lady Monarchs a 7-2 advantage. Krasley would get Widener back on the board at 7:52, but King's answered with a goal by Kovats with 3:48 remaining in the half as the Lady Monarch lead grew to 8-3. The Pioneers would score a much-needed goal when Lynch found the back of the bet with just 0:06 remaining in the opening stanza to bring Widener to within 8-4 at the break.

The Pioneers would quickly cut the lead to 8-6 when Glavin and Lynch scored consecutive goals in the opening 3:20 of the second half. But King's would respond with a decisive four-goal surge when Kim Murray, Niedt, Sabo, and King each scored to put eh Lady Monarchs on top 12-6 with 8:23 left in the contest.

Widener would attempt to battle back but a pair of goals from Krasley and another by Glavin cut the lead to 12-9 with 2:07 left but the Pioneers would draw no closer.

Both teams took 28 shots while Widener held a 26-22 edge in ground balls.

King's goalie Heather Kelly made nine saves to pick up the victory. Sabo led King's with four goals and one assist while King added three goals. Kovats and Niedt chipped in with two each for the Lady Monarchs

Pioneer keeper Brianna Tarry made 11 stops. Krasley netted three goals to led Widener while Glavin added three.

King's will conclude the regular-season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Moravian College in Bethlehem.
