SECOND HALF SURGE POWERS KING'S WOMEN'S LAXERS PAST WILKES, 17-10

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's lacrosse team strung together seven straight goals to break open a close game early in the second half as the Lady Monarchs posted a 17-10 victory over visiting Wilkes University Thursday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, King's remained alive in the Middle Atlantic Conference playoff picture, improving to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, slipped to 2-7 and 0-7 in the MAC.

Wilkes would push across the game's first goal just 1:41 into the contest. King's responded with a five goal spurt, fueled by two scores from Keri Niedt and one goal each from Lindsay Sabo, Grace King and Sara Alesso as the Lady Monarchs took a 5-1 lead with 19:08 remaining in the opening half.

The Lady Colonels countered with goals from Shannon Chlebus, Catherine Simone, and Lynsday Asinelli to cut the gap to 5-4 with 10:20 left in the half. King's would extend the lead to 7-4 with 6:57 remaining on goals by Sabo and King. Chlebus would bring Wilkes to within 7-5 on a goal with 4:58 on the clock, but King's quickly answered when Jenifer Marrosu struck net just 18 seconds later to give King's an 8-5 lead. Chlebus would then register her fourth goal of the open half with 1:23 remaining to bring the Lady Colonels to within 8-6 at the break.

Wilkes would continue to chip away when Asinelli scored just 1:26 into the second half to cut the King's lead to 8-7. The Lady Monarchs again answered when Melissa Gates broke free for a goal 1:57 later. But Wilkes would come right back on a Jennifer Compton score just 17 seconds later as Wilkes cut the deficit to 9-8.

After a King's timeout, the Lady Monarchs exploded for six goals over a span of 7:05 as Sabo netted two scores while and Niedt, Gates, and Karen Harp added one each as the King's lead grew to 15-8 with 15:10 remaining in the contest. Simone would put an end to the King's surge with a goal at the 14:00 mark, but Alesso would register her second goal for King's with 14:21 left to give the lady Monarchs a 16-9 lead with 10:21 on the clock.

After Compton scored again for Wilkes with 9:12 left, King's would run out much of the clock before Harp pushed across the game's final goal with 0:29 left.

King's outshot Wilkes 41-23 and held a 25-20 advantage in ground balls.

Sabo led King's with four goals and one assist while Niedt added three goals and an assist. King also netted three goals for the Lady Monarchs while Gates, Harp, and Alesso scored twice each.

Chlebus score four times for Wilkes while Compton, Asinelli, and Simone posted two goals each.

King's goalie Heather Kelly allowed eight goals and made 10 saves. Chrissy Keenan yielded two scores. Wilkes keeper Cassie Malone posted 13 stops.
