KINGS' WOMEN'S LACROSSE OVERCOMES SLOW START TO DOWN GWYNEDD-MERCY,
10-5
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's lacrosse team overcame a 4-2
first-half with seven unanswered goals as the Lady Monarchs posted a
10-5 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy College in a non-conference matchup
Saturday at Betzler Fields.
With the win, King's evened its season mark at 2-2 while Gwynedd-Mercy
slipped to 3-4.
King's opened the scoring at 26:55 of the first half when Lindsay Sabo
scored unassisted. Gwynedd would respond when Caitlin Volz scored
back-to-back goals to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead with 22:07 left in
the half.
The Lady Monarchs would even the game at 2-2 when Kim Murray scored off
an assist by Sara Alesso at 17:02. Gwynedd countered when Jennifer
Mathesian scored with 12:27 on the clock, then fed Kate Loftus for
another goal to give the Griffins a 4-2 lead with 7:49 remaining in the
half.
After a King's timeout, the Lady Monarchs would take control of the game
when Sabo struck net off an Alesso assist at 6:32. Grace King would then
score unassisted to tie the game at 4-4 with 3:48 on the clock. King
continued to ignite the Lady Monarch attack with a perfect pass to a
wide open Sabo in front of the Griffin net just 31 seconds later to give
King's a 5-4 lead. King struck again with an unassisted goal with 2:31
remaining in the opening half as the Lady Monarchs stretched the lead to
6-4.
King's closed out half with its fifth straight goal when Murray scored
off a Sabo assist with just 0:28 left on the clock as the Lady Monarchs
forged a 7-4 half-time lead.
In the second stanza, Sabo set up Erica Kovats for another King's goal
with 25:31 remaining. The Lady Monarchs would then post their seventh
consecutive score when King scored unassisted with 23:59 left in the
contest.
Gwynedd-Mercy would finally find the back of the net when Melissa Burks
scored an unassisted goal with 17:39 on the clock. King's would close
out the scoring when Jennifer Marrosu scored off of a feed from Sabo
with 4:06 left.
Sabo finished the game with three goals and three assists while King
added three goals and one assist. Murray netted a pair of goals while
Alesso dished out two assists. Heather Kelly turned away 15 shot in goal
for the Lady Monarchs.
Volz paced the Griffins with two goals while Lauren Monte made 11 saves
in goal.
King's outshot Gwynedd-Mercy 28-23, while holding a 24-20 advantage in
ground balls.
