SCRANTON DOWNS KING'S 12-7 IN WOMEN'S LACROSSE SEASON OPENER

SCRANTON -- Junior midfielder Jackie Messantonio scored five goals and senior attacker Kelly Herlihy added four to lead the host University of Scranton past King’s College, 12-7, in the Lady Monarchs' season debut at Fitzpatrick Field.

Scranton improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Middle Atlantic Conference play while King's stands at 0-1 and 0-1 in league play.

Junior midfielder Lindsay Sabo netted three goals with an assist while sophomore midfielder Grace King also added three goals.

Sophomore attacker Kaitlyn Mimnaugh contributed a goal and two assists and freshman attacker Madelyn Sminkey and freshman midfielder Diana Rocklein scored a goal apiece for Scranton.

King’s jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a goal by Sabo off a free position at the 8:21 mark and a goal junior defender Erica Kovats off an assist by Sabo less than a minute later.    Herlihy and Messantonio got the Royals untracked offensively by combining for five goals during an eight-minute span as Scranton took a 5-3 lead with five minutes remaining in the first-half.  King scored her second goal of the first-half to cut the margin to 5-4 at the 26:02 mark before Messantonio answered 39 seconds later with a goal off an assist by Mimnaugh.    Sminkey scored an unassisted goal at the 27:31 mark to give the Royals a 7-4 lead by intermission.

Sabo opened the second-half by going the length of the field for an unassisted goal at the 30:35 mark to cut the lead to 7-5.  After a Scranton goal, Sabo then scored another goal unassisted at the 32:29 mark.  After Rocklein extended Scranton’s lead to 9-6 with a goal off a free position, King answered for the Lady Monarchs with a goal off a free position at the 50:57 mark to make it 9-7.  The Royals closed out the scoring with goals by Herlihy, Mimnaugh and Messantonio in the final six minutes of play to seal the victory.

Senior goalie Courtney Enman made nine saves for Scranton, while sophomore Heather Kelly was credited with six stops.

King's will be idle until Tuesday when the Lady Monarchs host Lycoming at 4:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
