KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO SCRANTON IN MAC PLAYOFF OPENER

SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes of play en route to an 18-9 victory over King’s College in an opening round game of the 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference tournament Tuesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

Junior attacker Kelly Herlihy (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and senior attacker Samantha Augeri (Malverne, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan) scored six goals apiece and sophomore midfielder Jackie Messantonio (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and freshman midfielder Jennifer Frey (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) contributed two apiece as the Royals improved to 12-3.  Scranton advances to this Thursday’s semifinals against second-seeded Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

King’s, which put the wraps on an 11-7 season, was led by junior midfielder Patrice Cote (Somerville, N.J./Immaculata) and freshman defender Melissa Gates (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) with two goals apiece and senior attacker Kristen Greene (Myrtle Beach, SC/Pocono Mountain-Pa.), sophomore midfielder Lindsay Sabo (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley), freshman midfielder Grace King (Bryn Athyn, Pa./Academy of the New Church), sophomore attacker Kim Murray (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and freshman defender Michelle O’Brien Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored a goal apiece.

Herlihy scored four goals, including two at the 7:02 and 7:44 marks, and Augeri three as the Royals took advantage of a 13-4 edge in draw controls to keep the Lady Monarchs on defense throughout much of the first half en route to building a 12-4 halftime lead.  King’s cut Scranton’s lead down to 14-7 on goals by Greene, Sabo and King during a four-minute span early in the second half.

After a timeout, the Royals responded with an unassisted goal by Frey to make it 15-7.  Augeri then scored Scranton’s final three goals at the 45:38, 48:04 and 58:53 marks to offset King’s goals by Murray and Cote at the 44:58 and 51:59 marks, respectively, to set the final score.

Lady Monarch senior Mary Beth Clark (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) was brilliant in goal, making a game-high 21 saves, while the Royals’ Courtney Enman (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) had nine.  Scranton, which lost a 17-9 decision to Messiah earlier this year in Grantham, also received a goal from senior midfielder and co-captain Jeanne-Marie Lanza (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) and junior midfielder Kerri Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y./W.C. Mepham).

In another opening round game in the MAC tournament, Susquehanna defeated Widener, 11-9.  The Crusaders will advance to take on regular-season champion Drew University on Thursday, May 5, in Madison, New Jersey, with Thursday’s winners advancing to Saturday’s championship game at the site of the highest seed remaining in the tournament.
