KING’S NOTCHES 18-7 WOMEN’S LACROSSE WIN OVER WILKES

Edwardsville - King’s College set a new single-season wins record with an 18-7 Middle Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse win over Wilkes University on Wednesday afternoon at Ralston Field.

The victory improves the Lady Monarchs to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference.  Wilkes slips to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

King’s, which broke their previous record of eight wins that was set a season ago, raced out to a 7-0 lead in the opening 13:44.

Melissa Gates had two goals during the spurt, while Grace King, Michelle O’Brien, Sara Alesso, Patrice Cote and Lindsay Sabo had one tally apiece.

Wilkes got on the board on a goal by Stacy Fimmano at the 16:03 mark to cut the lead to 7-1. But, the Lady Monarchs got goals from Kristen Greene and Sabo to extend their lead to 9-1. Another Fimmano goal made it 9-2 with 11:12 left in the first half.

King’s would tally the final four goals to take a 13-2 lead at intermission. Kim Murray scored twice and Cote and Sabo added a goal each during the final run.

King’s would add four consecutive goals during the initial 11:58 of the second half to up their lead to 17-2. Murray and Alesso scored back-to-back goals before Kim Triftshouser hit the back of the net on consecutive shots.

Jennifer Compton knocked home a shot for Wilkes and Fimmano added two goals to help Wilkes close to within 17-5. After Sabo scored for King’s to make it 18-5, Krista Overstrom and Fimmano scored for Wilkes to cut the final deficit to 18-7.

King’s held a 34-27 shots on goal advantage, while also gaining a 28-13 edge in ground balls. Lady Monarchs’ goalkeeper Mary Beth Clark finished the afternoon with ten saves. Wilkes goalkeeper Dara Witty had eight saves.

Sabo led the way for King’s with four goals and four assists. The Lady Monarchs go three goals from Murray and two goals and two assists Cote.
Wilkes was led by Fimmano’s game-high five goals.
