KING'S FIELD HOCKEY WINS SHOWDOWN WITH DELAWARE VALLEY, 3-2

DOYLESTOWN -- Freshman Shawna Walp's second-half goal proved to be the game winner as the King's College field hockey team posted a big 3-2 victory over host Delaware Valley College in a battle between two of the top teams in the Freedom Conference Saturday in Doylestown.

King's, which defeated Delaware Valley 6-3 in the semi-finals of the Freedom Conference Tournament a year ago,  improved to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Delaware Valley, meanwhile, slipped to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

After trailing 1-0 at 10:37 on an Aggie goal by Bethany Pavlik, King's would counter to take a 2-1 halftime. Christina Glenn evened the game with an unassisted goal at 16:04, before assisting on the Lady Monarchs second goal just 2:23 later by Debbie Wychock. The goal Wychock was 23rd of the season, the most nationally in NCAA Division III.

Delaware Valley would tie the game at 2-2 when Holly Rich scored off an assist from Michelle Cernobyl at 36:34.

King's would score the game winner with 5:28 left in the contest when Walp would redirect a pass from Jenera Quinones into the Delaware Valley net, giving the Lady Monarchs a victory in its conference opener.

King's returns to action Tuesday when the Lady Monarchs travel to meet the University of Scranton at 7:00 p.m. At Fitzpatrick Field.
