KING'S FIELD HOCKEY SAILS PAST ELMS

WILKES-BARRE, PA -- At the first day of a field hockey tournament, the Lady Monarchs sailed past a young Elms College team. King's scored early and often en route to a 14-0 win.

The 14-goal outage was the second most in King's history, standing one-goal shy of the 15 goals the Lady Monarchs put up against Elms in 2006.

Debbie Wychock opened the scoring just five minutes into the match when she took a lead pass, split the defense and buried the shot to the goalies right. She scored again just four minutes later with a pass from Candice Russ. Just minutes later, freshman midfielder Jenera Quinones scored a shot off of a penalty corner.

Heather Kozimor kept the action going in the 17th minute when took it to the goal on a breakaway with the goalie. King's was then held scoreless for the next twelve minutes before Kristy Langella scored another corner, this time on the left side. Kozimor finished up the first half scoring her second goal of the day, again on a breakaway.

Wychock opened the second half, scoring just one minute in, bringing it down the left side and finishing. She scored two minutes later off a long pass from Christina Glenn. Glenn led Wychock with the pass into the middle and then Wychock turned and buried the ball. Quinones took her second goal of the day when she took a blistering shot down the right post.

Melissa Pirigy had a perfect day, taking two shots, both of them going into the goal. Her first came from Candice Russ, who finished the day with two assists. Pirigy's second goal was unassisted.

Briana Turnbaugh deflected a long shot taken by freshman Shawna Walp, who then scored a goal of her own just two minutes later. The final goal of the game was scored by Kozimor, her third of the day.

The Lady Monarchs are back in action Sunday when they take on the winner of the Vassar/ M.I.T. match. Game time is set for either 10:00am or 12:00pm. Please check back here tomorrow afternoon for results.
