KING'S FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO SPRINGFIELD 3-1 IN NCAA TOURNEY OPENER

SPRINGFIELD -- Jane Kelleher and Brittany Veazie each scored one goal with one assist as the Springfield College field hockey team, ranked 14th nationally, registered a 3-1 victory over King's College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament Wednesday evening in Springfield, MA.

With the win, Springfield improved to 20-3 on the year while King's ended its season with a 15-5 mark.

The Pride took a 1-0 into the halftime break when Kelleher scored off an assist from Veazie 15:27 into the contest.

In the second stanza, Springfield would stretch the advantage to 2-0 when Emily Murray scored unassisted at 42:54. The Pride would push the lead to 3-0 when Kelleher returned the favor and assisted on Veazie's goal with 16:18 left in the contest. King's would get on the board 2:27 later when Debbie Wychock scored unassisted. The Lady Monarchs, however, would draw no closer as Springfield advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Springfield outshot King's 24-5 while holding a 20-5 advantage in penalty corners. Lady Monarch goalie Kari Leach made 21 saves in the contest while Pride counterpart Emma Kaplan posted four stops.
