KING'S MELISSA GATES NAMED MAC FREEDOM DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ANNVILLE -- King's College field hockey standout Melissa Gates (Jenkintown/Jenkintown) has been named the Freedom Conference "Defensive Player of the Week, the Middle Atlantic Conferences office announced.

Gates played a major role in King’s 3-0 week, including three key conference wins that helped the Lady Monarchs clinch a Freedom Conference playoff berth. In a 1-0 win over DeSales, she helped limit Ashley Sparango, the Freedom Conference’s third leading scorer, to one shot during a game that went into overtime. In a 2-1 win over Wilkes, she helped King’s protect a 2-0 second half lead and stave off a late Lady Colonel comeback attempt by repeatedly carrying the ball out of the circle.

In a 2-1 double-overtime road win over Manhattanville, the senior defender helped King’s hold Manhattanville scoreless for the final 57:50 of the game and to one second half shots after King’s had fallen behind 1-0 early in the second stanza.

By going 3-0 last week, King's improved to 12-3 overall and are 5-0 in the Freedom Conference with one regular-season league game remaining.

The Lady Monarchs will return to action on Wednesday when King's hosts the University of Scranton in a non-conference matchup at 3:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
