KING'S FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS WILKES, 2-1
WILKES-BARRE --
Freshman forward Candace Russ scored a pair of goals, one in each
half to power the King's College field hockey team to an important 2-1
Freedom Conference victory over visiting Wilkes University Wednesday at
Betzler Fields.
With the win, King's posted its sixth straight victory, improving to
11-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile slipped
to 6-9 and 1-2 in league games.
Wilkes controlled much of the first half territorially but King's got on
he board first when Russ redirected a ball off the stick of Amanda
Schwartztrauber at 22:30 of the opening stanza.
The score would remain the same in the second half until Russ gave the
Lady Monarchs a 2-0 lead when she hauled in a loose ball in front of the
net and knocked in her second tally of the game at 43:25.
Wilkes, however, would not fold and cut the score to 2-1 with 10:02
remaining in the contest when Diana Wright scored on a corner off a feed
by Kristina Naviera. The King's defense would keep Wilkes off the board
the remainder of the game to preserve the victory.
The Lady Colonels held an 11-7 advantage in shots while also leading
10-6 in penalty corners. King's goalie Kari Leach was
strong in goal with nine saves while Melissa Gates and Grace
King also turned in solid defensive efforts for the Lady Monarchs.
Wilkes goalie Julia Smith posted five saves for
the Lady Colonels.
King's returns to action on Saturday when the Lady Monarchs visit
Manhattanville College for a 1:00 p.m. contest in Purchase, NY.
