KING'S FIELD HOCKEY DROPS 2 OT VERDICT TO
ALVERNIA
WILKES-BARRE -- Ashley Tatangelo score the game winning goal in
double-overtime as visiting Alvernia College posted a 3-2 victory over
host King's College in a battle of 2006 NCAA national tournament
qualifiers Tuesday at Betzler Fields.
With the win, Alvernia improved to 5-2 while King's (5-1) suffered its
first loss of the year in six games.
King's would reach the scoreboard first when Debbie Wychock scored off a
feed inside from Sarah McGrady just 4:17 into the game. Alvernia would
counter when Dawn Beiswenger converted a pass from Christy Miller just
3:11 later to knot the score at 1-1.
In the second half the Crusaders took a 2-1 lead when Lynsey Treadwell
struck net off an assist from Miller with 17:46 left in the contest.
King's, however, came back and forced overtime when Megan Farrell scored
unassisted with just 0:42 remaining in regulation.
King's had a golden opportunity to end the game with 8:53 left in the
first overtime period, but Crusader goalie Audrey Hoffman made a diving
save on a penalty stroke by Grace King to keep Alvernia alive.
After the conclusion of the first 15-minute overtime period, Alvernia
would end the game with 8:09 left in the second extra frame when Ashley
Tatangelo scored off a Treadwell assist to give the Crusaders the
exciting victory.
Alvernia would outshoot King's 31-20 and held a 12-10 advantage in
penalty corners.
King's goalie Kari Leach made 15 saves while Hoffman posted 12 stops for
Alvernia.
King's returns to action Saturday when the Lady Monarchs host Messiah
College, ranked second nationally in Division III, at 1:00 p.m. at
Betzler Fields.
