KING'S FIELD HOCKEY DEFENDS TITLE AT VASSAR TOURNAMENT

WILKES-BARRE -- Jackie Snover (left) scored a pair of goals and Megan Farrell added one goal with an assist as the King's College defended their team championship at the Betty Richey Invitational Tournament with a 5-3 victory over host Vassar College Sunday in New Paltz, NY.

With the win, King's improved to 5-0 overall on the season while Vassar slipped to 1-2.

King's pushed across the first goal at 26:18 of the first half when Snover scored off an assist from Christina Glenn. The lead grew to 2-0 when Snover tallied her second goal off an assist from Grace King at the 18:55 mark.  The Lady Monarchs would take a 3-0 half-time lead when Farrell scored off an assist from Amanda Schwartztrauber with 11:02 on the clock.

Vassar would look to rally early in the second half when Jessica Lance and Rachel Lowenthan scored within a 1:27 span to bring the Brewers to within 3-2 at the 42:06 mark.  King's would extend the lead when Ave' Moran converted a Debbie Wychock assist into a 4-2 Lady Monarchs lead.

Vassar would again answer when Katherine Simon scored unassisted at 57:48 to trim the lead to 4-3, but King's would close out the scoring when Sarah McGrady struck net off an assist from Farrell (right) with just 6:57 remaining in the contest to bring the final score to 5-3.

King's outshot Vassar 31-15 and held a 19-5 advantage in penalty corners. Lady Monarch goalie Kari Leach made 11 saves on the day.

King's placed four players on the the All-Tournament Team, including Farrell, Snover, Moran and senior  defender Melissa Gates.

The Lady Monarchs will be idle until September 18 when King's hosts Alvernia College in a 4:00 p.m. contest at Betzler Fields.
