KING'S
FIELD HOCKEY PLACES SIX ON ALL-FREEDOM TEAM, SABO REPEATS AS MVP
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College field
hockey team was rewarded for its outstanding season with six players
being named to the All-Freedom Conference team, the Middle Atlantic
Conferences Office announced Thursday. Additionally, Lady Monarch
senior star
Lindsay Sabo (Milford/Delaware Valley)
was named the Freedom Conference "Player of
the Year" for the second consecutive season.
Joining Sabo on the first-team is junior midfielder
Grace
King
(Bryn Athyn/Academy of the New Church)
and sophomore goalie
Kari Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley).
Second-team choices for King's included
junior forward
Debbie Wychock (Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin),
sophomore midfielder
Christina Glenn (Mountaintop/Crestwood),
and junior defender
Melissa Gates (Jenkintown/Jenkintown).
King's,
which will play for the Freedom Conference championship on Saturday,
stands at 18-3 on the year, posting a new school-record for victories in
one season.
Sabo is in the midst of wrapping up an epic career for the Lady Monarchs
as she holds virtually every offensive record in King's history. Sabo
ranked in the NCAA Division III Top-10 in scoring and goals scored.
This season the King's standout has totaled 59 points on 25 goals and
nine assists. Over the course of her four years at King's, Sabo owns the
school career records in total points (157), goals scored (61) and
assists (35).
King,
meanwhile earns her first berth on the all-conference team and has been
a standout midfielder all season long for the Lady Monarchs. Leach
earned her second straight first-team all-Freedom selection, posting a
1.97 goals against average while making 146 saves.
Wychock was relegated to the second team after posting a season nearly
as dominating as Sabo's as both players surpassed King's previous
single-season school-records in total points and goals scored. Wychock
has scored 55 points on the year with 22 goals and 11 assists. At the
conclusion of the regular-season, she led the Freedom Conference with 17
total points scored in league games, three more than Sabo, but failed to
get a first-team berth.
Glenn
enjoyed a banner year in the midfield for King's and proved to be a
major offensive threat with 16 points on five goals and six assists
while her booming strokes were able to quickly start King's fast-paced,
five-forward attack. Gates was named to the all-conference team for the
second straight year and proved to be the steadiest and most consistent
of King's defenders.
"We are very happy for the players who have been selected to
the
All-Freedom Conference team as it is a nice reward for all the hard
work they
put in," King's coach Cheryl Ish stated. "We are especially happy for
Lindsay as she has been such an outstanding player for us and for her to
conclude her career with such an outstanding honor, it could not happen
to a better person or player. While we recognize individual awards are
part of athletics, this team knows full well that there are many players
on our team who have played important roles in the success we have
achieved. These awards are a reflection of what we have been able to do
as a team."
King's will host the University of Scranton in the Freedom Conference
title game Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
