KING'S FIELD HOCKEY DOWNS DEL-VAL 6-3 TO REACH FREEDOM CONFERENCE FINALS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

WILKES-BARRE -- Lindsay Sabo (left) scored two goals and distributed a pair of assists as the host King's College field hockey team posted a 6-3 victory over Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference semi-final matchup Wednesday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, top seeded King's improved to 18-3 on the year while reaching the conference finals for the second straight year and three of the last four seasons. Fourth-seeded Delaware Valley, meanwhile, ended its season with a 10-9 mark.

King's would come out of the gates quickly when Christina Glenn scored unassisted off a rocket shot just inside the penalty circle at 28:25 of the first half. The Lady Monarchs would push the lead to 2-0 when Debbie Wychock drilled in a shot off a feed from Glenn following a penalty corner at 22:32.

Sabo would give King's a 3-0 first-half lead when she struck net off an assist from Sarah McGrady (right) with 4:51 left in the opening stanza. Delaware Valley, however would take advantage of a penalty corner late in the half when Bethany Pavlik scored on an entry pass from Shannon Shivak with no time remaining on the clock to bring the Aggies to within 3-1 at the break.

In the second stanza, Delaware Valley would cut the King's lead to one goal when Michelle Cernobyl scored off a Pavlik assist with 27:58 remaining in the contest. But King's answered just 0:19 later when Sabo tallied her second goal off an assist from McGrady to give the lady Monarchs a 4-2 advantage with 27:39 remaining.

King's would add to its lead just 3:25 later when Megan Farrell redirected a lead pass from Sabo just inside the left post to give the Lady Monarchs a 5-2 lead with 24:14 on the clock. The Aggies would attempt to rally when Cernobyl scored on a rebounded shot with 13:03 left to cut the lead to 5-3.

King's would put the game on a beautiful fast break when Wychock carried the ball inside the circle before passing the ball to Sabo near the left post. Sabo would then direct a one-touch pass to Ave' Moran to the right post for an easy tap-in goal to close out the scoring.

King's outshot Delaware Valley 16-12 and held a 12-8 advantage in penalty corners. King's goalie Kari Leach had nine saves in the game while Aggie keeper Jackie Deschenes made eight stops, including a save on a penalty stroke by Wychock with 3:49 left in the contest.

King's will host the winner of the Wednesday evening contest between second-seeded Scranton and third-seeded FDU-Florham in the Freedom Conference title game Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields. The winner of the Freedom Conference will gain an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
