KING'S WOMEN FALL TO SIXTH-RANKED SCRANTON, 78-57
WILKES-BARRE -- Senior guard Allison Matt scored
19 points and senior all-American guard tallied 14 of her 16 points in
the second half as sixth-ranked Scranton bested host King's College
78-57 in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams Wednesday in
Scandlon Gym.
Scranton, a 2006 "Final Four" qualifier, improved to 3-1 with the win
while King's slipped to 4-2 as the Lady Monarchs, who are arguably
playing the most difficult early-season schedule in Division III, faced
their fifth 2006 NCAA Division III national tournament qualifier this
season..
King's would hang tough for most of the first half and held a 22-20 lead
on a Kaitlyn Fiorino basket with 7:41 left. With the game tied at 24-24
with 6:04 on the clock, Scranton closed out the half with a 12-2 run to
take a 36-26 lead into the break.
King's would come to within 36-28 after scoring the first basket of the
second half, but Scranton used seven straight points from Mellody and a
traditional three-point play by Kathleen Daly to build a 46-28 lead with
16:51 left in the contest.
King's would cut the lead to 57-46 on a pair of foul shots by Andrea
Hochstuhl with 8:06 remaining, but the Lady Monarchs would draw no
closer.
Matt was just 3-of-11 from the field but made up the difference at the
fouls line, converting 13-of-17 of her charity tosses.
Jenna Palumbo led King's with 15 points while Hochstuhl added 13 points
and 11 boards. Fiorino chipped in with 11 points and five
rebounds.
KIng's next travels to face DeSales Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in another
Freedom Conference game.
