KING'S OPENS WITH 59-54 OVER OSWEGO STATE

ARLINGTON -- Sophomore guard Kaitlyn Fiorino netted a game-high 21 points and junior center Andrea Hochstuhl posted a double-double as the King's College women's basketball team posted a 59-54 upset over Oswego State University in the opening round of the Marymount Tip-Off Classic Friday in Arlington, Va.

King's used eight points each from Fiorino and Hochstuhl to open a 29-25 half-time lead over the Lakers, who won the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship and qualified for the Division III national tournament a year ago.

In the second stanza King's led 40-31 with 11:02 on the clock, when a Sarah Darling lay-up and a three-pointer by Fiorino would spark a 10-2 Lady Monarch run. Another basket by Fiorino and a traditional three-point play from Jenna Palumbo gave King's its biggest lead of the game, 50-33 with 6:34 left.

Oswego would attempt to rally and cut the lead to 56-48 with 1:38 remaining. After Hochstuhl made one-of-two fouls shots to extend the lead to 57-48 with 1:20 left, Oswego scored the next five points, cutting the lead to 57-53 on a three-point play by Kelly Mraz with 0:46 on the clock.

After King's missed a pair of foul shots, Oswego cut the lead to 57-54 when Lyndsey Marquit made one-of-two charity tosses with 0:23 left. Hochstuhl was fouled with 0:18 on the clock and made one-of-two attempts to give King's a 58-54 lead. After a missed three-pointer by Mraz, Hochstuhl was fouled on the rebound with 0:05 left and made the second of two attempts to close out the scoring.

Fiorino was 6-of-15 from the field but made 7-of-10 foul shots while distributing four assists. Hochstuhl scored 12 points with 15 rebounds while Palumbo netted 12 points on the day. Kaityln Malshefski came off the bench to score six of her eight points in the first half while chipping in with five rebounds. Lauren Kendra contributed three points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.

Marquit led Oswego with 16 points and seven boards while Sarah Lombard added 15 points and nine rebounds.

King's will next face defending New Jersey Athletic Conference champion and 2006 NCAA national qualifier Richard Stockton, a 59-50 first-round winner over Alvernia, on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The winner will then move on to Sunday's 3:30 p.m. championship game.
